Privacy policy
Last updated: October 5, 2026
Summy (summy.ink) makes the summy apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android, and this website. This policy covers all of them.
The short version: your notes are yours. There are no accounts, we don't sell data, and we never see a note unless you share it.
Your notes
Notes and attachments are stored on your device. If you turn on iCloud sync (Apple devices), they are stored in your own iCloud account by Apple, along with your profile name and picture. We have no access to them.
Notes you share
When you share a note, the app uploads its text, results, charts and attachments to summy.ink so it can be shown at an unlisted link. Anyone with the link can read it. Shared pages and their API responses are marked so search engines don't index them.
- There are no accounts. Sharing gives your app a secret token that proves you own the share. We store only a hash of it, never the token itself.
- When you stop sharing, the note and its attachments are deleted from our servers. The text of a share stays until you stop sharing.
- The attachments of a share that nobody has opened or edited for 180 days are removed from our servers; the text and link stay, and the attachments come back the next time you edit the note in the app. Your copy in the app is never touched.
- We record when a share was last opened, at most once a day per note, to apply the rule above. We never log the content of shared notes.
- To limit abuse, we count how many notes are shared and how many license requests are made from each IP address per hour (up to 20 shares and 60 license requests). The IP address is stored next to that count, not linked to any note, and the entry is overwritten the next time that address makes a request. Entries are not otherwise deleted on a schedule.
This website
summy.ink counts page views and clicks on the Download and Get Pro buttons with OpenPanel, a product analytics service. The browser sends these to our own domain, which passes them on to OpenPanel together with your IP address and browser details, which OpenPanel uses to estimate your country and device type. We don't set cookies. Pages of shared notes are reported without the note's address, title or referrer.
Your browser's local storage holds your theme (light or dark), how you like shared notes displayed (font, grid, size) and a list of the shared notes you opened in that browser (their title and id). It never leaves your browser. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes every request and may keep standard operational logs.
Usage statistics (desktop apps only)
The Mac, Windows and Linux apps send anonymous usage events, for example "app opened", "note created", "note shared" or "note exported" (with the file type), along with the app version, operating system and a random install ID. They never contain note text, titles or links. Like the website events, they pass through summy.ink to OpenPanel with your IP address. You can turn them off in Settings under "Share anonymous usage". The iPhone, iPad and Android apps send none.
Things you fetch
Link previews and My Numbers values are fetched by the app directly from the website you entered. They don't pass through our servers. Secrets you give a My Numbers script stay on your device.
Purchases and licenses
Summy Pro licenses are sold by our payment provider, Dodo Payments, which is the merchant of record. It handles your payment details and email under its own privacy policy; we don't receive them. When you activate a license key in a desktop app, the app sends the key and a device identifier (a hash the app makes, not your hardware ID) to summy.ink, which checks it with Dodo Payments. We store a hash of the key (not the key), the device identifier, Dodo's activation IDs and the times of the activation and the last check, so we can count your devices. The apps also check the license about once a month.
Children
Summy isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their data.
